Salt Water
I am leaving for vacation next week. My mom will be staying and taking care of all of my animals. Is it okay to make salt water in advance, put it in a mason jar with a lid, and leave it at room temperature for her so she doesn't have to worry about making the salt water? I know it is fairly easy bu...

Re: Molting or dead? How long to wait?
Good to know! I can't believe this but we dug up the two hermit crabs that have been buried for months. The one was very dead, smelled awful poor guy :( the one that buried itself in DECEMBER we thought was dead. Come to find out, it was its exoskeleton that we had found. My husband (assuming they w...

Re: Molting or dead? How long to wait?
Im sorry, my reply was confusing. I have two tanks- 1 tank has 2 hermit crabs in it. This is the tank where it gets down to 40% humidity. And this is also the tank where the two have buried and not resurfaced. I then have a bigger tank with one hermit crab in it that holds an 80% humidity, without s...

Re: Molting or dead? How long to wait?
It is super low for humidity! The crab we adopted from our friends came in this tank and that is what he lived at for over a year and very rarely did they spray, it breaks my heart 😭 but I'm so thankful he survived and he is now thriving in his new tank that stays at 80% humidity lowest and we never...

Molting or dead? How long to wait?
We bought 3 hermit crabs a couple of weeks before Christmas. On the first night, one buried. Within the first week, one died. And sometime in January ( I should have wrote the date down) the last one buried himself. The two that buried have not come up yet. Their substrate is 3-4 inches deep and it ...

Re: Crab hasn't moved in days
Update on Crabby! He survived :) he was definitely doing a surface molt. My husband and I found out his substrate was too wet. We fixed it and covered his tank with a towel. He never buried himself during this molt, i think by the time we addressed the substrate issue, he was too far along in the pr...

Re: Crab hasn't moved in days
He does get dechlorinated water and salt water, daily. We make his salt water with instant ocean salt. We have been carefully following the food pyramid off of this site to make sure he gets a good balanced and varied diet. I just measured his substrate it's only 4 inches deep, I'm reading it should...

Re: Crab hasn't moved in days
I'm pretty positive he isn't. He is a really messy eating and gets his water really dirty and both always look untouched. I get up atleast once a night to pee and always check and never see him out :( I do know he was LOADING up on food shortly before this. He was eating SO much more than normal. So...

Crab hasn't moved in days
We adopted a hermit crab from a friend in December. They had him for a year prior to us taking him. They didn't take the best care of him (only pellets for food, low humidity, no salt water, painted shells). We let him get adjusted and once he was adjusted we upgraded him to a big tank! He loves his...

Re: New to crabs molting!
Thank you! Oh man, out of all of those I really hope it's just stress 😔 we plan to keep them separate from our other one for a couple of weeks. Do you think that's long enough, in case they do have a disease? Good to know about keeping the substrate moist on the surface. When I read that about tunne...

New to crabs molting!
Hey all! We are new to hermit crabs. We adopted one from a friend a couple of weeks ago and just yesterday we bought 3 more that we plan to introduce to the other one once they're adjusted to our house. Upon checking on our 3 new ones this morning I noticed a crab leg in the tank and one crab missin...

UVB light
Hey guys! New crabbie owner, we have had ours for 2 weeks. Im reading conflicting information, does he need a UVB light? I think he is a purple pincher? I'm not sure if that makes a difference or not..
