Mites
Hello everybody, this is my first post on this website and I am new to this, but I have owned hermit crabs for a few years now. I have 5 saved purple pincher with a 20 gallon tank and access to both salt and freshwater. They have hiding places and 8 inches of coconut fiber/play sand. I mist their tank daily and have a heater on the back of it. I also have tons of natural turbo shells as I read that purple pincher liked those. I just started noticing mites in their water bowl and some aren't moving but others are jumping around. I don't know how to include pictures or videos yet. They are like little grains of rice. I want to clean their whole tank and boil all of the shells and plants. My parents think they'll be fine and they think I'm wasting my money on them and they think crabs are fine in a little plasit container but I have done my research. What do you guys think I should do? I know some mites are very toxic and can kill the crabs but my parents don't even care. I literally bought everything for my crabs but my parents won't let me clean anything and they think I need their help with It but I can literally do it by my self. They claim that I will make a mess and therfore they won't let me change it. So any input is greatly appreciated

Re: Mites
Elongated and jumping bugs are almost always springtails which are both harmless and beneficial! Truly harmful crab mites are extremely rare and can only come from other crabs as they can only survive by eating live hermits, they cannot jump and will only be found on the crabs.
