Mixing Salt for De-Miting

Post by Guest » Mon Jun 13, 2005 7:14 am

I have mites! I'm past the freaking out part & ready to get down to business! (Just so you know, I have all PP's.)

I have done the searches & am ready to battle, but I didn't see anything about mixing the salt except where it says to mix it stronger than the drinking water. Does anyone know just how much salt to use? I have the Doc. Wellfish salt.

Thanks!!

After doing more searching, does it even have to be salt or can I just use regular dechlor water to bathe them for removing mites?

I think

I think the salt water would be better for that but I've never had more than one or two mites. Those were on two of my guys when I brought them home and floated out in the first bath water...

Mix the salt water just like the directions say...For salt water aquarium fish to be sure you get the right mix. I think Oceanic is 1/4 cup to half gallon of water. That's how I mix it. There's a section on the right for FAQ's so check that out for mixing directions.

I believe its the sea salt that kills the mites so thats why people recommend using that. Not sure on the strength though as I havent had to do it yet (knock on wood).

I've read you should double the salt ratio -- so if its normally 1/2 cup to a gallon, use a full cup, with a generous amount of Stress Coat (or Aloe Vera). ICK --That makes a fresh water rinse pretty important.

Good Luck

I would not

I would not suggest mixing the water more than what the ocean is. Think about it. How do hermit crabs get rid of mites in the wild? They wouldn't have double strength ocean water. They would have ocean water.

They soak in it when they have a boo-boo like broken leg tips and when their gills are hurt...So give them regular mixed ocean water. Instant Ocean or Oceanic are good brands.
