Isopods

Post by IMS08 » Fri Apr 29, 2016 1:11 pm

Hello Everyone!

I wanted to ask how many of you guys have Isopods and are they helpful? I've been interested because my hermit crabs always scatter food and if there was something to eat them, that would help a lot! Just wondering your thoughts.

I do not have any at the moment. I am about to set up a potato trap. @soilentgringa PMed me some good info and pictures on how to make a trap.

I am really excited to see if my crabbies with interact with the isopods too.

I found the image @soilentgringa made for me on how to catch them. I have two potatoes out today so we will see if I have any luck.

Are there any types of bad Isopods that will be harmful for my crabs?

I would stay awaty from the giant ones

I imagine whatever you catch in your yard is fine. My understanding is you should not feed your guys the first generation you catch because they could be exposed to pesticides. I have read they breed quickly and those isopods would be sure not to have any odd chemicals on them.

I put out two potatoes today so hopefully I will have some soon. They are also for sale in the classified section of HCA.

What is the purpose of Isopods?

I have teeny tiny ones that like to crawl through the hole in my window screen so I tend to end up killing a few a day whenever I see them creep out lol. (I think they're isopods?)

Should I be worried about them getting into the crabitat? I doubt that most of them would be able to even get far enough to even find the spare room with my crabs but I also know that I can't kill them all. Not a big fan of bugs.. ESPECIALLY spiders... But if they can help, I wouldn't mind Isopods so much since they don't creep me out as much as some other bugs.

They eat mites and crab poop. They are like tank rumbas.

They are super easy to breed. Ours have multiplied by the hundreds.

I just caught 10 today. The little girl across the street was very confused about why I had potatoes in my flower bed... I tried to explain but failed.

That's way too funny!

@soilentgringa thanks! Any tips on keeping track of the older ones who might have pesticides and whatnot on them? Don't want to hurt my little crabs lol

Honestly once they start breeding, you can just pick the smaller ones out. They have hundreds of babies.

Thanks for all of the good info! I am so excited about the little guys. I have mine in my old crab tat. I can't wait to introduce them.
