UVB?

Post by Oliviet#1 » Thu May 09, 2019 4:58 pm

Do hermit crabs need UVB? If they live on a beach where there is sun, won’t they need it in a tank too? I have read that some reptiles need it in order to produce certain vitamins. I have an UTH on the back of the tank but not a UVB fixture. Thanks
I have had pets in the past, but my family can’t have any furry or feathered ones due to allergies. I usually try my best to help and currently trying to set up a crabitat. I also try to treat others with Love!❤️

Insects aren't known to require it, and because of their thick shell it's really unknown if crustaceans get any benefit either. They have completely different calcium channels than mammals and birds so don't require vitamin d to produce bone and calcium structures either.

That said, they certainly are more active when given UVB and some reports say they brighten their colors as well.

On a related note, I think there was a study that found that some insects do produce Vitamin D3 in the presence of UVB.

However I have no idea if crustaceans can do the same.
