Best ways to take crabs on a long car ride???
Best ways to take crabs on a long car ride???
I am moving and will be driving 14 hours to my new location. My crabs have never been in the car for more than 20 minutes and that was when I first got them. Also, because it was such a short drive I could hold their little tank and make sure they didn't get jostled around. However now, I will be traveling a much longer distance and cannot give them that level of attention. Basically, what are the best ways to transport crabs? I am really worried that them being in the car for an extended period of time will stress them out and I don't want them to die. Should I move them into a smaller space or give them more substrate to dig into? I'm just not sure the best way to keep them comfortable and happy, I have had them for a couple years now and am very fond of them. Any tips are greatly appreciated.

Ciaraalstan moved and took her crabs on a long ride to their new home. Here's the thread about it, you will likely find all the info you need, but feel free to ask any questions that aren't answered in the thread:

Moving them into individual containers of damp moss is what most crabbers do. The moss provides food, moisture, and cushioning.

We purchased a power inverter for the car. Basically that converts the 12 volts in you car to 120 volts. You just plug it into your accessory or cigarette outlet. We plugged a thermostat and UTH into the inverter and used our 10 gallon ISO tank for transport. We used that on a 5 hour drive transporting crabs each direction. We kept about two inches of moist Eco Earth and kept low hides in the tank.
I would think using a combination of Curly's and Joe's techniques along with a power inverter you could probably travel cross country.
When picking an inverter just be sure you check the wattage of the UTH, and thermostat to the output of the inverter. Some inverters even come with USB ports so you can plug more things in too!
