Heating Pad Location

Post by Breenie.west » Sat May 09, 2020 11:17 pm

Hello all!

I am adding an adjustable heating pad to my 20 gallon set up prior to getting an hermit crabs. I know it should got on the side, above the substrate. But should it go on a bare wall? Or could I place it on the side where I have a climbing wall located? It's a layer of coconut fiber climbing background from Petsmart.

We put ours on the back. We have backgrounds as well and it doesn't affect the heat in the tank. We also use regulators so the heat pads don't get too hot and keeps in safe zone. Not too cold or too hot.

I mean I am no expert but, I would recommend putting it on the bare wall because then sometimes they may want to snuggle up to it. Or at least mine do so I’m sure it wouldn’t hurt to put it on the climbing wall but they seem to like to snuggle up close to it.

We use plastic light diffuser (egg crate) with crafting mesh as background, so when our crabs climb on it, they are not right up against the heat pad.

If your crabs are hanging out by the heat they Might want you to turn the heat up if possible. I believe I heard that from Mary Akers.

Well the heat seems to be at good range but, I am currently switching them to a 20 gallon upgrade and I will probably get a new heat mat since the one I have is probably not strong enough for the 20 gallon!
