Re: Play Sand
Ps. In the meantime, I really need to change my crab’s bedding. Due to product availability at my local pet store, as well as misinformation from the store clerk, my crab currently has the wrong kind of bedding. Can I just use two bricks of coconut fiber for now? Also, I am unsure whether or not to do so because the crab is hiding a lot and I don’t want to stress him...but I have already given him a month to adjust to his new environment. I think I should go ahead and change the bedding cuz it’s been a while.

Re: Play Sand
Coconut fiber on its own can work, but be sure to wring it out before adding since the package directions for the bricks will make it much too soggy.

Re: Play Sand
Also, I wanted to give fair warning and let other crab owners know-I read the amazon reviews for a product-one that was recommended on this thread-Flukers Hermit beach sand is the product. A lot of people who left the reviews said that their crabs died within a few days of using it. I would definitely not recommend that product!

Re: Play Sand
Fluker's Hermit Beach sand is considered safe for crabs. When people leave reviews, it is impossible to know what else is going on in their conditions.

Re: Play Sand
I agree with Curly. Calcium carbonate can be harmful as a substrate but there isn’t enough of it in Fluker’s sands to cause harm.

Re: Play Sand
A huge percentage of new crabs die. My running tally when I was trying to save pet store crabs was like 70% death rate? It was nuts. Many are too far gone before they ever get home. Deaths of established crabs are something to be concerned over!
Straight EE can work. It's fussier, but it can be done.
What I do when I'm stuck on my own, is have the store load the bag of sand in my trunk, and then at home I scoop it out and bring it inside in small batches. One 50lb bag will fill a 10 gallon nicely. I can't lift more than a few pounds now safely, and if I wait on my husband then it might get done in a few years.

Re: Play Sand
I'm not sure if you are near one, but our local Home Depot is delivering due to the pandemic. Of course you do have to have to meet a minimal order amount - but I would never have an issue with that!
Truly blessed to have incredible creatures, wonderful friends and my amazing family in my life!! I'm very thankful & grateful for all of them! www.thehealthyhermit.com
