Not shedding exoskeleton

Post by Hermielover121 » Wed Apr 29, 2020 4:44 pm

:?: pls help me! Hi I have two hermit crabs, They are purple pinchers. I have about 5 1/2 inches of a eco earth and a 10 gallon tank I feed them a bit of store-bought food and fresh veggies. I also have two salt and fresh deep water bowls (And a hide obviously). When I first got them about a week after they buried them selves for three days I thought they were molting but then realize that it must’ve Not went through the full cycle because they did not shed and it did not last very long. They have not molted ever since then until about Five weeks ago when they showed signs of molting and buried them selves underground. Now one of them just came up it’s in the same shell that it was before the molt and I cannot find any exoskeleton anywhere😬

Also in the day time he digs down and I’m afraid he may disturb the other hermit crab that is molting!!!!

When a crab molts, it does not leave it's shell. It will be in the same shell when it come up, as it was when it went down. Sometimes they will change right away when they come up and sometimes they won't.
A crab will stay buried the entire time it molts, eats it's exoskeleton, and waits for it's new exo to harden so that it is not easy prey when it surfaces. You will not be able to see what it is doing, and will not know if it is molting, destressing, or just hanging out. It is rare that any exo is left for you to find, and if it is, it is usually buried. Your sub needs to be sand castle consistency so that their tunnels and cave don't collapse.
As long as you have enough substrate and your tank is not over crowded, crabs generally don't dig each other up.
When you say you are feeding store bought food, do you mean commercial pellets? Do you give a source of protein and calcium daily? What brands of dechlorinator and salt do you use?

I have not been giving calcium but I just realize that I really need to so I am doing that starting today I am giving them thrive tropical hermit crab food Melody it’s a blend of pellets dried shrimp and mealworms along with fresh fruit and vegetables. For dechlorination I leave it in a glass jar for 24 hours and for salt water I use thrive hermit crab soaking salt

I'm not sure about that food. Here;s the link to the care sheet about commercial foods - you could check to see if there are preservatives in the one you have.

While that salt won't hurt your crabs, it won't have all the minerals they need long term. And letting it sit won't remove everything that needs to be removed. Here's the care sheet about water.

Do you have enough shells for them to choose from?
How are your heat and humidity?

Pellets aren’t that good for them but I don’t think it’d be harmful to use up the container.

Unfortunately, I don't have a response because I'm experiencing something similar. I adopted my hermit crabs from the pet store about three weeks ago one is about 1 inch and the other is roughly 2 to 3 inches. Neither of them have yet to molt, but they do burrow to sleep, I assume, and come out at night to eat and play and such. Is it bad that they haven't molted yet? Or could that just mean they have already molted before, or that they're stressed, or just aren't ready yet? As said by the person above, I also feed mine the same exact Thrive food medley, but I also give them a Tetrafauna meal and a varied fruit and veggies diet. They have all the right temps and water. Any advice would be greatly appreciated,Thank you.

Are your temp and humidity good? How big is your tank? You do need to have deeper sub all over your tank (I already said that in another post).
