Hermits not eating

Post by Rits » Sat Nov 07, 2020 12:31 pm

Hey guys, so I am a new crab owner and have had these 2 rescue crabs for about a week now. http://hermitcrabassociation.com/phpBB/ ... 8&t=123923

I offer them a variety of food every night but they don't seem interested at all. I did Organic Raspberries, Apples, Strawberries and All Natural Cat Food. (Chicken, Turkey, Sweet Potatoes and Kale) I saw dirt on the food but no visible parts were moved or eaten at all. One crab doesn't seem as active as another and I am worried I might be dealing with PPDS. Any tips or ideas on what I can do? Also, I had to remove one of my oddball pieces of driftwood because mold started growing. Yikes. Not really off to a great start. My UTH is arriving today so I won't be using the heat lamp anymore and will try to manage my Humidity better.

I have also placed a grocery order for Broccoli Slaw, freeze dried fruit, unsweetened Coconut Flakes and Unsweetened Apple Sauce.

Anything helps, I really want these guys to pull through.

When I got my first crab, she barely ate. At all. I thought she would starve. But after her first molt, she got much better, and is way more healthy.
Could be due to PPDS, or just overall stress. Pine now has 3 tankmates and they absolutely destroy their food every night.
You are feeding them a correct diet which is good. However, I buy foods and mixes from HermitGrub (you can find her shop on Etsy) and they won't eat from any other store. She sells mixes, as well as proteins, fruits, , veggies, calcium and more.
Her food can be a tad pricy but it's worth it (just spent $30 on food... I love bulking up)
The heat could also be a factor so is say watch them, get new foods if you wish (you really don't need to But my crabs love the food) and wait for a molt.
It can be 100% natural for them to not eat especially after the stress of a new home.
If you do decide to purchase from HermitGrub, here are some foods that I recommend:
Honey granules, Color Me Purple, Chicken breast, all star breakfast, Green sand, Apple powder, crab and lobster shell, crushed oyster shell. (She also sells sets/bundles )

Hope everything goes well, hope they start eating and if you have any questions don't hesitate to ask.

I heard a lot of good things about HermitGrub. I have checked it out and it all sounds yummy for them. I will order what you have suggested. Thank you for the help! I will monitor a bit more and just offer food to them daily in hopes they finally wanna chow down.

No problem! I hope they finally start eating.
I am still fairly new to crabbing as well (I started 7-8 months ago), and so I can relate to all the stresses of first getting crabs!
(are they okay? Are they moving? Eating? ect...) :) I bet if your tank conditions are great, you'll be good to go!

I swear that for the first couple of years I had my crabs, the only way I knew they were eating is that they were still alive. LOL.
You can buy mixes if you want, but crabs can eat many of the same foods as we do, just unseasoned. Be sure to check the 'nutrition' care sheet. Keep offering a variety of foods, including calcium and protein daily. Sometimes it takes offering the same food a few times before a crab will eat it.
As far as PPS, just be sure to have all your conditions ideal, so they can recover the best they can.
