UPDATE! + Seeking Advice

Post by Rits » Tue Dec 22, 2020 12:15 pm

Hey guys! Just wanted to give an update on my Hermies and then asking for advice which I will get into below.

My Intro: http://hermitcrabassociation.com/phpBB/ ... 8&t=123923

So where do I start. I rescued two Hermit Crabs on October 30th, 2020 by surprise. I have never owned Hermit Crabs my entire life. Some Reptile/Fish/Amphibian discords I am in for my pacman and fish tanks recommended me to go here so I can give the best possible life to these unfortunate babies. The forums have been very educational, Thank you guys so much. I did however, lose one of them 2 weeks ago from pps. It was just the 2 in the 10g and they both were inactive from the start. Only one of them changed shells and that was the one who is still alive but mainly burrows/tunnels, doesn't eat much. C.I.P (Climb In Peace) :(

I work at Petsmart in the Pet Care Department (Manager in Training) and I want to say we probably have the best Pet Store Hermit Crab enclosure in all of California. I have taken the duty of caring for it the proper way. Climbing, Hides, Deep Substrate, Humidity, IO Saltwater Bowls and Freshwater Bowls. Freeze Dried foods, Cuttlebone and even Hermit Grub food I had way too much of. I have left notes and communicated with all my Co-workers about the proper care of hermit crabs and hope that my set up will teach new owners the proper way to care for them.

About a week ago, I had a customer come into my work and asked if she can return a Hermit Crab. It was past her 14 days but she said her daughter was afraid of it. I offered to take it from her hands and she agreed since "she was going to be stuck with it" and she didn't want that. She handed him to me and left the store. He seems pretty active and has definitely brought life to my tank. Eats all the yummy Hermit Grub food ( I fed Grannys Garden, Bee Pollen, Green Sand, Spirulina, Quinoa and Skeletal Repair) and leaves a mess of the shells everywhere. (He has switched 2 times now)

Moving on to Present day~ Last night. When I was doing my weekly deep clean of the Hermit crab Enclosure at work, I noticed one hermit crab didnt have his big claw. I let my Manager know and she said the only thing we could do is to adopt him out. (Basically give away for free) I offered to take the little guy because he seemed fairly active and was the same size as my other 2. I do only have a 10g, and will be moving soon once the house sells to Florida. Then plan to move them into a 40B. He seems to be okay in my 10g with the other 2. (Basically 1 because my original Hermit is tunneling to China) What would be the best thing to offer him to help heal his wound and start the repairing process? (I usually don't want to name the Hermit Crabs just yet, but this one was instant. I named him Clawless)

Also, is it normal for Hermit Crabs to pile into the same tunnel? They are stacked on top of one another and clawless sits on top like the King that he is.

For healing, protein and calcium are important since they provide essential growing nutrients.

Piling up can be a sign that there’s something there they want, usually cover. Adding more hiding places can help encourage them to spread out.

Okay, I will set out some foods higher in protein. Along with some cuttlebone and oyster shells.

Maybe its lack of hides? I will try to create another hide with some extra Coconut Fiber I have lying around. You dont possibly think the crab tunneling is molting and they are trying to get to it do you? They seemed to have stopped piling as of right now. They have decided to move to the other hides.

If your substrate depth is triple the crabs’ height the risk is pretty low since diggers tend to tunnel. If they’ve scattered they were probably just hanging out there.
