Using beach sand and water

We live 45min from the gulf coast and so have ready access to natural sand and ocean water. Is it safe to use these or is there a way to ensure using them safely?

The biggest concerns are pollutants such as microplastics and chemical residues. There’s no good way to check for or get rid of them and they’re not necessarily something you’d want enclosed in a small space with animals.
