Hermit crab not moving and now there is mold

Post by Samantha6 » Sun Dec 27, 2020 10:05 pm

We’ve had this hermit crab for 3 years. It has lasted through many other hermit crab friends. We got a new one and now the new one is out of his shell not moving. It moved a little at first but hasn’t moved since and our 3yr old hermit crab is not moving. It is on top of the sand mixture. Hasn’t moved in 2 months. We check on it often. And now there is mold on the 3year one. My son is soo sad. Is it dead? Need input. There isn’t a smell of anything from the tank. And we have smelled dead crabs before. Any help is appreciated

If the crab has not moved at all in 2 months, I am afraid it is dead. Same if there is mold growing on a crab.
If you pick them up, do they fall out of the shell? If so, they are definitely deceased.

If you would like help in figuring out what might have gone wrong, you can fill in the 'emergency template' so we know what your tank is conditions etc are like.

He doesn’t fall out when we pick him up. He’s balled up in there tight. Usually my son can talk to him and he comes out but he can’t get him to come out. We spend a lot of time with them so this is odd. I was afraid he was dead. But my son who loves everything living is holding out for hope since it’s his little friend. Lol. I know that sounds weird but he played with him all the time. We got a friend for him and after that the crabs were inseparable then all of a sudden this happened. So was hoping I was wrong. His color still looks pink and purple so wasn’t sure. Thank you for your input.

Is there a fishy smell to tue crab? Have you tried gently tapping the large pincher to see of there is any movement?

No fishy smell. And we have touched his pinchers. but he’s not moving. I think he died on us 😔. Was hoping I was wrong.
