Crab dumped salt water pool. What do I do?

Post by JordinW85 » Fri Jan 15, 2021 11:09 pm

My wife and I have 3 hermit crabs and yesterday, we believe our big male dumped his salt water pool completely and left a swampy mess of the substrate. Do we change it out entirely or what. We are getting concerned, because we keep alternating the lid being open in order to regulate the humidity. It fluctuates between 70 and 90 when we do this. Any suggestions?

A few more questions...
As was asked, how big was the pool? LIke how much extra water went into the sub? Is it soaking wet? Is there standing water in the bottom?
Do you have any crabs underground? If so, they could drown, so you may need to dig them up. Be ready to isolate them, in case they are molting.
What do you use for substrate? How deep is it? You may be able to salvage some or all of it, by adding dry sand or dry EE to it. Or you may be able to bake it to dry it out.

Bottom line is that you can't leave it like it is, or it has the potential to grow harmful bacteria. But what you need to do might depend on a few variables (above questions).
