Fumes

Post by crabbycasey » Tue Aug 10, 2021 4:05 pm

Hey everybody!

Depending on who reads this, you may or may not remember that I had a fire back in March. Well, it’s finally restoration time! We had to move everything out of the house for them to do the work. 5 out of 7 crabs are down so I didn’t want to risk moving the tank and the restoration team said they would work around them, thankfully.

How concerned should I be with fumes? They will be cleaning everything (floors, windows, cabinets) and all new paint in the whole house. I bought a large clear drop cloth to put over their tank so they can still get their natural day/night light cycle. I planned to drape it over them and tape it to the floor. I’ll feed them all dry stuff so it will last longer and I can avoid removing the drop cloth as often. It should be about 3 weeks of work. Hoping for insight on potential harm from fumes and open to other suggestions!

Thanks HCA!!

Fumes typically aren’t something you want to breath in. Cloth will help but sealing with plastic wrap to enhance airtightness may be advisable, especially if working next to the tank.

Don’t forget to turn off fans and air pumps.

Thanks, Joe! Was planning to turn off bubblers and will now wrap in shrink wrap as well…just to ensure they’re safety.

This amount of chemicals I would be concerned with. Is there anyway to remove at least the above ground crabs while they do their thing, and then air the tank out a bit before returning? I've painted in the same room with my crabs before, but with no VOC paint and plenty of ventilation in the house. Doing an entire house in one go plus the hardcore cleaning might be too much.

That’s what I’m worried about. I can definitely move the 2 that are up…but I’ve got 4 or 5 down (one may have passed, separate post).
