Single crab, potential loneliness?
Single crab, potential loneliness?
I’ve had my crab Sim for about 3 years or so and around a year ago, he killed his roommate. This was during the other molting, Sim was able to smell and find it and ended up pinching it to death. Ever since I’ve had just him, and he seems to be doing great. He climbs around and redecorates all the time, he eats and drinks plenty, he’s extremely active and molting multiple times a year. He seems to be thriving, but I know they’re social creatures and I’m worried about him being alone. I’m very active in the room he’s in, and I try to take him out and spend time with him at least a few times a week. Is this enough socializing, or is it unjust to keep just him even with me spending time with him? Thanks!

It seems like he is a crab that doesn’t enjoy other crabs, that or he just doesn’t have a big enough tank. How big of a tank do you have?
I wouldn’t get another crab unless you upgrade to a bigger tank, even then, he may be stressed by a companion.

Re: Single crab, potential loneliness?
I've had my Ruggie by herself for 5 years now and I think she's doing great. She's even produced eggs. I have no plans to change anything for her.
I have had another teeny (well, medium now!) PP by himself for the last year and he seems to be doing well and is growing incredibly quick. He's too small to go in my large PP enclosure, it's not well sealed and when my jumbos get out they don't really get away anywhere because they are too big. This guy would disappear and I'd never find him again, so he stays in his own tank for a bit longer.

I have a 20 gallon, and I change out some of the toys every month or so. Thanks for your response! I haven’t thought about that he might just not like other crabs much, that gives me a strange level of comfort hahaHermieBingo wrote: ↑Tue Oct 05, 2021 8:53 amIt seems like he is a crab that doesn’t enjoy other crabs, that or he just doesn’t have a big enough tank. Ha ha
A 20 gallon is a reasonable tank size for him unless he is extra large.
I would just stick with your one crab, and consider him crabby toward other crabs! Ha ha
