Creating new habitat

Post by Tadertot » Sat Apr 09, 2022 11:54 am

Hi all,
I recently had two crabs pass away I thought they were molting or hiding and only coming out while I was asleep but unfortunately I was wrong. One looked like PPS the other looked like it got into a fight. I still have one crab left and I don't want it to be lonely but until I know what I did wrong I don't want to get another. My tank is 122 liters the humidity is between 55 and 70 according to the gauge and the temp is between 70 and 80 degrees Fahrenheit. I use mostly coconut substrate with a little sand mixed in on one side that is currently 4 inches deep and I keep moss in there hides of which I currently have 2 one is a enclosed cave the other is an more open cave (no bottom so they can dig if they like) there is one salt water pool and one fresh water pool I feed them a mix of dried shrimp and blood worms along with dried or dehydrated apple cranberries and mango as well as supplementing with fresh fruit and vegetables. I was thinking if I could add a second level and have a safe way to climb to it then that would make enough room for my one to have a friend. Any suggestions are welcome I want to be the best keeper I can

Have you had a look through the care sheets? If not, start with the 'basics' one, then go from there.

A few suggestions/ ideas/ questions from me are below.

Is your substrate at least two to three times as deep as your largest crab? Is it moistened so that it holds it's shape?
Are you feeding a source of calcium daily? Crabs do best with a varied diet, which includes calcium and protein daily.
Your humidity should be higher, ideally around 80%.
PPs are okay with temps down to 72, but ideally 75-80 would be better and they will be more active.
How long did you have the crabs for?
As far as how many you can have, that depends on the size. Your tank is about a 30 gallon, if I am correct. Unless your crab is huge, you for sure have room for at least one more - there is a care sheet that outlines how many can comfortably be in a tank of what size.

I did look through the basic care sheets before I got them to make sure I had everything I needed.

The substrate is about 3 times as deep as the biggest crab and try to turn the substrate once a day and mist a multiple times a day.

I started calcium again and I try to frequent the food forum here for ideas to keep the variety.

I will definitely work on getting humidity and temp up.

I've had them for about 6 months. And you are correct it's 32 gallons and my crab is still pretty small

I appreciate all the advice Its very helpful 😊

Do you have a lid on your tank? You shouldn't need to mist multiple times a day to keep the humidity up.
Also, you don't need to 'turn' the substrate daily - do you mean you are mixing it all up? You may be creating more work for yourself than is needed. I 'fluff' up my substrate maybe once or twice a year, as long and nobody is underground.
