Holding crabs

Post by Crabmama2 » Sun Apr 02, 2023 9:29 am

Hi, I’m a new, old crabby owner. :cheer: I’ve been searching for information about crab care and ran across “crab central station “ while some of their info is good but some info I find not so good. What are your feelings on hold crabbies? I’ve always held them and never seem to have any problems. I don’t want to hurt them, which is what cst says will happen if I do hold them.

You will find that some groups are very militant when it comes to certain things about crab care. Holding/ not holding. Certain ratios for substrate. Depth of water pools. Etc. HCA is more relaxed, and we recognize that there are different ways to successfully care for crabs. Some people hold theirs, some don't. If you are on Facebook, there is a member there who handles his crabs very regularly, and lets them out for walks in his yard (he lives very close to where crabs live in the wild). We would suggest waiting until newer crabs have settled in and molted, before trying to handle them. And then to be mindful of their stress levels, as some crabs will of course be more comfortable with being handled than others.
