Molting hermit crab

Post by NewiesMom22 » Tue Nov 07, 2023 9:54 pm

I’m new to having a hermit crab I bought Fig a few months ago at a truck stop by the beach and had no idea how much effort it took to keep these little guys thriving. So I did my research got a 20 gallon tank built him a second story with eggcrate for him to climb all over. I also bought bubbler water dishes off Etsy and a wheel. I placed moss all around and made sure he had plenty of shells and places to hide. I have 7 inch substrate. He was pretty active but he started to slow down so I decided to buy him a friend because I read they are social creatures. Unfortunately Stick didn’t survive long after I had him shipped (never again). I was going to give it another try and pick up a friend instead of shipping but then Fig went under a clump of moss and hasn’t moved in weeks. He’s against the glass a bit so I can sort of see him. He’s tucked in his shell and all I can see are his little legs but they are much lighter than before and It almost looks like another crab is infront of him but I only have one crab, so I’m assuming that’s his exo. I’ve checked the smell of the tank over the past few days and I know the smell of a dead crab..R.I.P Stick..so no smell. But he’s still not moving and he didn’t bury himself so I’m worried what’s going on. I heard surface molts are much more dangerous but not to mess with them. So I haven’t touched him at all. So Im guessing im just going to have to wait it out. Has anyone had their crab molt under some sephgram moss and come out okay?

Yes, I would keep waiting him out. If he's the only crab in the tank, you don't need to worry about another crab harming him, which is good. Keep your temp and humidity at good levels, and hopefully he will do well! Don't try to move him or mess with him until he is moving around normally again.
