Hermit crab substrate

Post by Ash06 » Mon Jun 16, 2025 5:01 pm

I’m new to being a hermit crab owner and have a very important question I bought the coconut chip reptile bedding brick when I got my very first tank thinking I could mix it in with play sand but once I started researching it it says it’s not a good idea to mix the coconut chips into the sand and I recently got a new larger tank and I bought 3 bags of sand but that wasn’t enough. So would it be possible to put the coconut chip reptile bedding brick in a blender and blend it down to coconut fiber then mixing it into the play sand for my hermit crab substrate mix?

Is it larger chunks of coconut husk? You might be able to break it down, but I'd also be worried about breaking your blender!
The reason we use the fiber vs chips is so that it will mix in with the sub. You don't actually need to use any of it, you can use all play sand if you want.
