New Crabs for a Solo Crab?
New Crabs for a Solo Crab?
I rescued a hermit crab (purple pincher) 3 years ago from a family that had no interest in taking care of it. I had wanted to get a few more to keep him company but for a variety of reasons have not been able to yet. Are there any issues with introducing new crabs to the tank? (I currently have 20 gallon but will upsize as needed). My current crab is a decent size now and is used to being on his own but I know they are.naturally social. Would love tips/recommendations about whether to introduce new crabs and if so, how? Thank you! -Sarah

Re: New Crabs for a Solo Crab?
What used to be thought of as social behavior is now better understood as resource sharing. Crabs do just fine on their own as solo crabs or in pairs or groups. So the decision to add more is really personal preference.
If you do introduce any new crabs, we suggest a quick dip in the fresh water for both old and new crabs, so that everyone smells the same and nobody seems like an intruder!
