Sizing-How to

Post by mshipman » Sun May 27, 2018 6:03 pm

How are hermit crabs sized? I have a PP that I think is pretty large. I've had him about 14 yrs? He just came up from a moult. He moved into a larger shell. This is the shell he just dropped. Image

Thanks
Lynn

Hi! Your shell has about a 1.5" opening so you're looking at an XL-Jumbo sized crab if it fits in there.

Probably about the same size as my Lemmy who is also estimated to be around 15 yeas of age.

We do have a printable size chart somewhere around here too.

I'll give him a few days then measure the aperture of his shell now. Thanks! Lemmy is a handsome crab

I honestly don't remember. It would have been many many years ago and I wouldn't have been active for very long.
I got two tiny hermit crabs as a lark in 2004. One died very soon after. Right now I'm having difficulty finding resources to deal with a crab this size. My local store thinks he will drown in the water dishes I bought him and thought I was spoiling him by having such deep substrate. I get a weird stare when they offer me shells and I say no he doesn't like those and they are too small anyway. He has only ever had green turbo shells. :)
He just came up from a moult and right now is messing with his old and new shell.

Woah! That’s a pretty big dude!
My largest is 1 1/2 inch opening, and is roughly four inches with his legs spread :)

I measured the other shell and it's not a 2" shell. Just slightly larger than the 1 1/2" shell. I am going to order some 1 3/4 and 2 inch shells. I hate picking him up and don't know if I can get a measurement of his legs.

Thanks for your help

MSipman, where are you going to order from? I am having difficulty finding some that size for my big guy. Mine only likes pearl turbos, sigh.
