Adopting 3 new crabbies!!

Post by crabbycasey » Mon Nov 02, 2020 6:34 pm

I am so excited to announce that I’m adopting 3 new crabbies this Friday!! They are all medium-sized PP, named Hermie, Mrs. Crabs and Turbo. I started crabbing just a couple months ago, but thanks to the HCA I’ve got an ideal and stable crabitat for my 2 now, Hermione and Flash, and couldn’t be happier to have more coming!

I’m hoping for advice on the best way to introduce everybody. They will all go into a new tank together so there won’t be a “familiar smell” of anybody when I put them all in. I’m a little worried about my small guy, Flash. Everyone else is bigger than him and I don’t want him to feel threatened...plus he’s already a little quiet. He could still be de-stressing or getting ready to molt, but he doesn’t do much. Have posted about him here before trying to get insight on his behavior...

I have loads of shells, plenty of food to go around and will probably do about 8” of sub. Plan to have lots of hides too.

What is a good size tank for 5 PP, mostly medium? The lady I’m adopting from is graciously giving me their 40 gallon breeder tank and I’m so thankful!

Thank you everyone! Here’s a pic of the newbies ImageImageImage

As for number of crabs/ size/ tank, be sure to read the care sheet:

If they are all going into a new tank, and all have been above grouind, most people just give them a quick dip in the fresh water and away they go.

Oh yea, I remember seeing that chart guideline when I first joined! Forgot about it, so thank you! Looks like I should be good to go then...just a little freshwater dip for everybody and we’ll see how it goes from there, lol. Wish me luck! I’m so excited!!

Thank you Pumpkincrab! I can’t wait for Friday, lol.

Hoping your sweet little Pine is doing okay...and I’m sure Star is crawling around in her shell made of gold (but not heavy, lol) in Hermie Heaven! Image

Update on adoption...

I got them yesterday from a wonderful lady who loaded me up with all kinds of stuff for them, she was great! As excited as I was, she was sad to say goodbye. Made me feel good though because after all of our communication, she said she felt really good about it. They will certainly be well loved and have everything they need! We’re going to stay in touch so I can update her and send pics too.

Spent a total of about 6 hours setting up their tank...and my arms are going to be soooo sore from creating the perfect substrate mixture (mixed it layer by layer, by hand with a spoon), lol. It was worth it though! I wanted to share the new tank (still not quite done) and pics of the new crabs...as you will see, they are going to be a mess!

Lol, love them already! ImageImageImage

Curious to get some opinions on this next part...what do y’all think about changing their names since adopting them? My son really wants to rename them, lol.

THEY ARE SO CUTE! I wouldn't feel bad renaming them. After all, they are yours now!
