You really don't know. That's why it is important to offer 3 to 5 extra shells per crab, then they can choose which shell and when.

I just brought a rescue crab home today, and within hours she changed shells. My oldest crab didn't change shells for years. It's a total guessing game. So like CS said, just have some ready to go just in case!

I like watching them check the shells out...they seem so picky! You have to wonder what they look for...thickness, opening, weight, color...?
