I recently bought my first hermit crab (!!) about 20 days ago. He's finally settled in and is comfortable moving around during the day. I tend to keep the tank light on a day/night cycle, but he doesn't seem to mind. However, recently he's been taking his spare shells from all over the tank and piling them in the middle of the tank. I've never heard of this behaviour and I'm wondering if anyone has seen this behaviour before?

I am not completely sure, but i bet he is just making himself at home.
Also, i suggest you get him a friend or two (if conditions allow). Hermit crabs can get depressed with out other crabby friends, especially Ecuadorian hermit crabs.
Good Luck

and have fun!

Maybe he’s just piling them all up in one spot so he can compare them and pick which one he likes best! Lol. Really I have no idea...will be interested to see what the experts say on this! They’re such fascinating little creatures, love hearing different stories about their behaviors.

It sounds like he may just be excited to have that many pants to choose from at once! In the wild and the pet trade, good pants can be tough to come by. He wants to stockpile his new clothes in case of an emergency lol!
