New crab owner

Post by Nikkie777 » Fri Dec 10, 2021 10:17 am

So I just got 2 hermit crabs from a souvonoir shop and drove them 8 hours home. I have them set up in the small tank I got there with sand while I was getting a bigger tank and all the stuff they need. As soon as I put them in the tank one (Henry) sat in saltwater bowl a bit then buried himself immediately. The other one (Harley) just hides in the cave all day and night and doesn’t move unless we get her out and put her by her food. I’m just worried as I don’t know if this is normal? Maybe they are just stressed from trip home? I just wanted some advice. I’d like to get them into permanent tank as soon as possible!!

Also I can hear Henry moving around in the sand. I can hear his claw clicking against plastic maybe or his shell.

Could you give us some information about your tank conditions?

Yes right now they are in that stupid plastic tank I brought them home in, but I have an under tank heater and a thermometer/hydrometer gage. I have sand filled halfway up and gravel (which I’m taking out as soon as I can). I ordered a light and coconut fiber substrate plus a coco fiber climbing thing for back….. I was having trouble keeping humid until I moved heater to bottom. Plan to move Harley to 10 gallon tank tomorrow ( I got screen and glass lid) but obviously I can’t move Henry until he comes up. I’m just worried!! Harley seems like she never eats/drinks/ or even moves unless we take her out! I know we got them at the worst place possible but I just want to make sure they are ok and that they survive!!!!!!

Well there is your problem! Your crabs are of course stressed, and once you move them to a new house they should perk up after a bit. Just make sure the tank conditions are ok.

here is the HCA care guide to reference/read/re-read.

Good luck!
