HCA: Hermit Crab Association

In around a month or two I’ll be moving to a different state. It’s a 12 hour drive. My hermit crabs are currently in a 36x18x18 tank. I have a 20 long and a 10 gallon that can fit in my car for transportation. I’ve only seen one hermit crab on the surface recently, the rest I’m guessing are digging around in the substrate.

-How do I transport my hermit crabs to my new house?
-What do I do for their water & food while transporting?
-How do I keep humidity and temperature at the right levels while they’re in the car?
-What do I do if my hermit crabs are buried/not on the surface to move them to the tank that can fit in my car?

You can pack them in plastic food containers filled with damp moss, which provides food, water, and humidity. For temperature you’ll have to play with climate control but if you want to try insulating them you can.

Diggers I would dig up and pack away like the rest. Some people have just picked up the whole tank but I prefer to make sure they won’t have collapsed tunnels.

I had a nineteen-hour move last year and had zero casualties.

Given you are probably going to have to take down the 40b tank anyway. Pack'em up like JoeHermits suggested as you are emptying that tank.
