injured hermit crab

Hi,
I got a jumbo hermit crab in November. He molted in April and lost his big claw and a leg. One of his legs looks bent and each limb looks much thinner than before. He never changed shells, even though I bought a variety of options and made sure they would be the right size. I have been helping him to make sure he gets food and water because he has trouble moving and often tips upside down and can't right himself. However, last night he came out of his shell and won't go back in it. I have a huge tank and no other hermit crabs as I didn't want to have him get attacked. I read that it can take up to 3 molts to regrow limbs and that at his size, he's likely to molt once every 18 months. So I am very sad/worried because I can't see him making it that long the way he is now. I really thought he was going to die last night but he is still alive and not trying to burrow. I think he honestly couldn't move well with the shell and came out because he can move better. He has always been and continues to be incredibly friendly. He would always come flying out of his shell, very far when I would pick him up. I guess I just don't know if there's a chance of him being ok or not. I read that out of their shell will cause them to dry up and die soon. I have sprayed him with a mist. (salt water) Not sure if I should just wait and see or if he is suffering and I should euthanize him. (and I don't know how to do that) Buddy is my first hermit crab. I appreciate any input. Thanks.
