Knats

I change my hermit crab's food every day but I'm finding their crabitat is now filled with knats! What am I doing wrong??!! There is no rotting smell inside. There are still 6 crabs that are alive (same amount I've had)I check on my crabs daily (I'm almost obsessed bc I like them so much) so why the knats?

What's their behaviour like? There are several species of small flies that can invade, and each one is for a different reason. What do they look like? Red eyes? Humped backs? Do they fly, run?
