Adding More Crabs? by KyMart
Adding More Crabs? by KyMart
I have had my two hermit crabs, Frog and Bug since August 30th, they are both PPs, and they have been doing very well! Frog has changed shells 3 times and is finally in a natrual shell! Bug has yet to change shells, but has been checking out some new turbos! They have been in a 10 gallon tank since May 13th, and they seem to be doing well but appear to be getting a little crowded and agitated, as mentioned in some of my previous topics. On June 13th I bought a 40 gallon breeder tank for them that I will be setting up within the next few weeks. I plan on ordering a big tank stand; the stand can hold up to a 75 gallon so I have room to upgrade my tank but not my stand in the future which will save me money. I have 100lbs of sand, and 3 bricks of EE on the way. I have two water pools, prime, and instant ocean already, as well as a variety of crab safe foods that will give them all of the food groups and nutritions they need to be healthy. I was wondering if you guys had any thoughts on whether or not I should get an additional one or two PPs to my 40 gallon breeder once it gets set up. I don't want to cause them stress or any problems, but I also feel that getting more PPs would make me happier, but their health comes first. I have also thought about getting 2 Indigos and putting them with my two PPs, but I don't want to cause extra stress by adding a new species. Please let me know what you guys think is best to do.
I have 4 PPs in a 40 gallon breeder!

You're probably not going to find Indigo crabs in the US.

Exotics require a little more work than the 'standard' PP, so I would suggest holding off Exotics until a little more experience gets under your belt.
If you're head strong on Exotics, you may have issues in obtaining them, as crabs in the pet trade are becoming a little more uncommon, and hermit crabs aren't really bred in captivity to offset restrictions of Exotics. But you could certainly keep some room open for Exotics, and if you have the chance to adopt/purchase some, then do it then - particularly when you have a little more experience!!

Ok, fair enough! Since my new tank is a breeder and many exotics need more substrate, I will wait until I am more experienced and upgrade to a 75 gallon! I will probably just end up putting my PPS in the 75, buying a 55 Gallon stand that has a space for a 40 breeder, getting a 55 gallon tank, and having 4 aquariums, two with fish, two with crabs!aussieJJDude wrote: ↑Sun Jun 18, 2023 2:23 amExotics require a little more work than the 'standard' PP, so I would suggest holding off Exotics until a little more experience gets under your belt.
