Buried Hermit Crab

Post by sophiacitter » Tue Apr 22, 2025 9:48 am

Hi everyone,

I am new to hermit crab care and I just have a quick question. I just got my hermit crab on 4/19/25 and he stays buried all of the time but he is only buried about an inch into the sand so I don’t think he is molting. My other hermit crab is out and about even during the day and I also just got her. I have plenty of tank enrichment and hiding spots for him but he constantly just buries himself in the sand. The tank temperature is perfect and so is the humidity. I did have to drive two hours to get him so I was thinking that maybe the drive was hard on him but I am just getting nervous that he has PPDS. How can I tell if he has PPDS? Also, how long does it take for a crab to start coming out more? I am just so worried for him and I don’t wanna fail him. I cannot afford to buy a specific tank for PPDS crabs so I was just wondering what I should do. Is he maybe trying to find a place to molt or is he just very shy? Thanks to everyone who responds!

Welcome to crabbing and to the site!
There is no need for a separate PPDS tank. It is better to have your crabs in proper conditions right from the start, as soon as you get them. There is no way to really know if a crab is suffering from PPS. All you can do is to provide proper environment, water, and food. The two hour drive would be fine for them. It sometimes takes a few weeks to months before crabs are done de-stressing. They go through a lot before we get them. If you have only had them a few days, their behavior sounds very normal!
