HCA: Hermit Crab Association

Hey everyone, I bought a "crab kit" and have modified it the best I can until I can get the 29 gallon tank I've picked out. I have 2 PPs and 2 Es.

I am learning how much that goes into being a crab owner. I'm already attached to those cute little eyes and antennae! I'm going to give them the best life possible as I keep learning and giving them what they need.

I want to ask, how do you moisten the play sand when you're putting 8-"10" deep of substrate?

I ordered 4 PPs but I was sent 2 PPs and 2 Ecuadorian hermit crabs. They are in a 10 gallon right now, this is only temporary until I get the 29 gallon tank at the end of the month.

I know that Es need at least 10" of substrate and I'm wondering, how do I moisten the play sand to turn it into "sandcastle" sand? I don't want to flood my crabs

What are you using for substrate?
I find it easier to mix and moisten sub in buckets before adding to the tank. If using play sand and eco earth - if the eco earth is a block, you can soak it in water then add it to the play sand. If the sand is dry, this combo can make a good level of moisture. If you are using the dry loose coco fiber, you can add it to moistened sand. Basically it is just a matter of adding water to the sub and mixing it up to see if it is the right consistency. You could also do it in the tank, as long as your crabs are in separate containers temporarily. Be sure to use dechlorinated water.
