Can crabs drown?

Post by crabnewb » Tue Feb 10, 2015 9:51 pm

Obviously you dont want them trapped in the water dish for eternity, but if i were buying large pools that have a built in ramp mechanism, is it necessary to have something down like gravel or canvas?

Crabs can drown, but only if they are trapped with no way to the surface. So long as the ramp can be climbed by all the crabs in your tank it'll be safe. Smaller crabs often can't climb the same things bigger crabs can.

I suppose it would be more helpful if I gave an illustration, i'll order the pools soon and post a couple pictures. I'm not sure whats considered small hermit crab adequate.

No way to really know until you test it on the hermits you have. Like any new deep dish, do a test run to be sure before leaving them alone with it. :)
