One crab molting, one crab loney

Post by colliercl » Sun Jan 15, 2017 1:45 pm

Hello ,

I have two crabs I adopted in June who lived in an elementary school previously. When I took them home in June, both spent the month of July molting. Then more recently I had one crab go down in the beginning of November to molt. The other crab has been by himself for almost 3 month and spent about 2 weeks doing another molt also.

I have a 10 gallon tank and the plan was to buy a bigger tank and another crab in the spring when tanks are on sale. However, I am concerned that my above ground crab is lonely with out his friend. There is no death smell so I think he is still alive, just prefering to stay undergroUnd for a very long time.

Both crabs are about the size of a 50 cent piece or a Snapple cap, so they are large but not yet jumbos. Should I try to fit another crab in the tank or just keep waiting for the crabs to be reunited above ground?

The crabs know that their buddy is underground. They can still hear them and they know they are there. Buying a new crab because one seems lonely or because they are all jolting is the quickest way to become overcrowded. That's what I did.

It's good that they're molting for you. :)
Seems like they're settled in and well adjusted.

I'm sure they'll love the new tank and roommate once it's all set up!

Is it okay that the one crab has been underground for so long? He is not yet a jumbo, but he has a larger crab (think Gatorade top size)

It's perfectly fine. When they go under they do not mol t right away. They dig around and find the perfect spot. Then they sit and distress for a little while. Finally they mol t and then they eat their exo and stay down there to recover. They will come up when they are ready.
