Surface molting or dead?

Post by giannaw » Wed Jun 01, 2022 7:16 pm

Hello! I was checking on my one hermit crab that has been always hiding in this part of the sand (it was on the surface) He’s very stiff, pale (like white), but his one leg is orange, and he was halfway out of the shell. I don’t know if he’s dead or sick, but he wasn’t limp or anything. Please help me!

UPDATE: today, his big pincher is out of the shell but he’s more out of his shell. I did move him yesterday to a isolated tank due to another hermit crab. He’s still white, while the ends of his legs are orange. He’s also very stiff

-another one of my posts mentioned about a running naked hermit crab but he eventually got in a shell. This is the same hermit crab and ever since that day my other hermit crab has been avoiding him.

Hello! I just took a picture today, I’m positive she molted because she has her exoskeleton as well! She came out of her shell and she is hardening, how long would I be waiting for until she’s ready to move back into the big tank?

But will she go back into her shell after she hardens? She is still out of the shell and hasn’t eaten her exoskeleton yet.

And I could post a picture, how would I post it?

Crabs don't leave their shells to molt. They drop them when they are too week to carry them. I'd still suggest filling out the emergency template to get a better look into your tank conditions. You can post a pic by using an image sharing site, or download the Tapatalk app. I use the app, and it makes it nice and easy to attach and share pics on the boards.
