Hermit Crab Molting Questions

Post by ChonkyCrabsLover » Tue Jun 24, 2025 10:19 am

Hello, today when I woke up I saw that BOTH of my crabs decided to molt. However, one of my crabs is already out of his burrow and done molting by around 11AM. He wasn't just testing the burrow either like I have seen my crabs do before, because he was fully submerged and he covered his hole back up after he went in. I have no idea how my crab is already done molting in under 12 hours. My crabs have had a history of molting very quickly, but this is insane being done in that much time. Everywhere I look it says it will take weeks or even months for a crab to molt. For the size of crab I have, it should take 3-6 weeks. Does my crab just like digging? I feel like he wouldn't cover his hole back up or spend that much time in it if he was just digging. My crabs seems a darker purple color and his legs are hairier than normal, so I guess he did molt? Does this make sense to you? :D

My crabs will often bury themselves for a couple days (or more) (or less) without molting. It's likely your crab was just digging around. How large is your crab?

My crabs are medium-large. About a week after, the crab went down to actually molt and is still under the sand now. My other crab that dug down just resurfaced yesterday and is looking a lot bigger. I had a solid month of not seeing my crabs because they were both molting. Everything is looking good now!
