I Hope My Nose is Wrong But...

Post by Crabinski » Fri Jan 15, 2016 5:44 pm

I hope my nose is wrong but I think I've lost one of my two remaining molters. My sense of smell is compromised due to year-long allergies but I could swear there's "that odor" in the crabitat for the past few days.

All four crabs went down late October/early November and two have come up, all nicely molted: small Charles Paris came up on 12/22 and medium Mr Pinch on New Year's Day. Still under are medium Felix and large Big Enzo. I just can't believe anything could have happened to Felix (with me 7+ years) because he's just too ornery to die so my gut feeling is it's Big Enzo. No plans to dig at this time -- I'll just wait until someone else comes up before looking for the remains or, if the smell gets really strong, I'll have to see if I can pinpoint the area it's coming from before poking around.

Think good crabbie thoughts for Felix and Big Enzo!

Any chance they stashed some stinky food somewhere? Seafood or eggs or meat? I hope that's all it is and that your crabbies are all ok.

Nope, all is clean food-wise. Charles Paris and Mr Pinch have been eating freeze-dried (insects, shrimp, blood worms), small bits of fruit and veggies, eggshell with albumin (remove after 24 hours) and peanut butter with honey.

Have you had a second sniffer's opinion? I'll be looking forward to reading future threads about Big Enzo and Felix's resurfacing act. If not, my hugs and shoulder are at your disposal. Happy alive crabs trump tears and hugs, so I'm sending you guys my best wishes.

The odor level hasn't changed so I hope it is my imagination! Big Enzo is such a clumsy goof and such a wuss, it would be a shame to lose him. Felix, on the other hand, is a real hard case and I think would be missed by only his toady, Mr Pinch, and me -- the other two would probably cheer!

Big Enzo is OK! He came up briefly last night after almost 3 months down and is enormous, based on the few quick glimpses I got of chunky tree trunk legs. Now I only have to worry if the odor is Felix or some very long-forgotten food buried deep.

I'm glad Big Enzo is ok! I'm sure Felix will resurface soon too. They do love to worry us. :D
