14 Months Underground

2 of our 3 Hermit Crabs have been underground since Oct 2017?!?! That's 14 months. Does it ever take 14 months to molt?

There's no fishy smell (we have 8 inch deep sand). I've even gotten a flash light and looked through the bottom of the glass aquarium to see if I can spot them. I can't.

In the past, these 4 year old crabs molted for 6-9 weeks tops.

Should I assume they died?

14 months is way too long for medium crabs to molt, unless these are jumbos which doesn’t sound like it if they normally took 6-9 weeks. Something may have gone wrong during that time. If they passed away during a molt, you wouldn’t smell anything with 8 inches of substrate.

Fourteen months would be long even for a jumbo. If you’re sure they’ve never come up, you may want to start planning to dig.

Thank you both for your replies.

Sadly, you were correct. Both Shelley and Brittany had passed :(

My husband dug them up today. We moved Alvin into a smaller tank with new sand and surroundings. He seems very happy.
