Hermit crab hasn't molted in 2 years

Post by hermiehomie345 » Wed May 25, 2022 10:37 am

I have had my hermit crab for about two years and he was pretty successful in his acclimation after the pet store and seems to be relatively healthy. My only concern is he does not seem to have ever molted. Twice he has buried himself deep in the substrate for weeks and I've assumed he was molting but he remained in the same shell and I have not found any exoskeleton remains when cleaning the tank. I have about 6" substrate and plenty of extra shells as well as good humidity/temperature in the tank so I'm not sure what could be preventing him from molting. Is there anything I should be doing to encourage him to molt? Could he be deficient in calcium or some other nutrient preventing the molt? Thank you in advance! (P.S. normally I would assume he is just on his own schedule and would molt when he is ready but I feel like 2 years is just too long a time not to molt)

Crabs eat their exo for nutrition/calcium when they molt. That would explain why you never found any. Crabs don't leave their shells to molt, and don't necessarily change shells before or after a molt either. So it's likely your guy molted when he buried himself for those weeks.

did he ever appear to be "hairier" after coming back up? that's one sign of a possible mold
