Feeding canned crickets
Just opened a can of Fluker's crickets (purchased at Petsmart) and was surprised to see whole insects (minus legs). How should I feed them to my large crab? Do I need to cut them up first? And can I freeze and save the rest? While it is a small can there's no way he'll eat them any time soon!
Also, should I dry out the rest in the oven before freezing them?
Thanks--

It's up to you! You can offer them whole, or you can cut them up. If you bake them you do not need to freeze them.

Re: Feeding canned crickets
Give them to him whole, so long as you don't mind him dragging them away and hoarding them.
They do freeze well. I recommend spreading them out so they freeze individually rather as one large clump, that way you can take out one at a time as you need them.
You could dry them out a bit if you wanted, it would keep them from getting freezer burn and keep them from sticking together, but I have a feeling it would smell really bad!

Dried insects do have a certain aromatic... je ne sais quoi.
But if you store buggy things in a well sealed glass container (I use ones with little metal latches & rubber rims) the delicate perfume of desiccated bug bits isn't too noticeable. Until you open the jar.

Thanks, all! Going to try just freezing them for now. I haven't opened the can of river shrimp yet--that will be another adventure, I'm, sure!

Ooh river shrimp.... could you tell me what brand or where you got them. I haven't seen that type of stuff near me and I'm looking for more protein to feed. Right now all mine seem to be on a big seed binge. They don't touch much else I put in the tank.

Check the reptile section of your pet store
that's where I always see the canned stuff like that.

Sweet! Thank you. I've bought canned turtle food before but it didn't seem to be too popular. It was a mixture of fruit and worms.GotButterflies wrote:Check the reptile section of your pet storethat's where I always see the canned stuff like that.

Re: Feeding canned crickets
My crabs straight out refused the canned crickets, canned mealworms, and canned river shrimp. I fed it multiple times several days apart, and just no interest. Had the same problem with the dried krill/river shrimp. On GBs recommendation I ground the dried krill up, and they like it much better now. Next time I'm in a shopping mood I'll get some dried insects and grind them up too. Apparently, presentation matters.

Ha ha!!!! Hilarious! I know for my crabs they prefer the dried stuff ground up. Fresh they like it cut up. I've never tried canned.Hermias_mom wrote:Apparently, presentation matters.

Got the river shrimp and crickets in the reptile food section at Petsmart. So far the crickets seem to be being ignored.

Re: Feeding canned crickets
I've tried the canned crickets and canned river shrimp without much success. Not quite ready to give up yet (since their tastes always seem to be changing), but definitely not a big hit with my crew so far.
