Which foods last longer in the tank and how long would they keep (ish)?

Post by Harry Wang » Sat Dec 28, 2019 4:05 pm

So most calcium sources, moss, cholla wood and sea urchin husks can be left in for much longer than other things they consume, of course.

But what about things like:

worm castings
greensand
nuts
mini freeze-dried shrimp

Would these still be good after 3 days if they stay dry? And for about how long?

I briefly tried googling it. Couldn’t find what I was looking for and thought “I bet they’d know on HCA!”

Worm castings and greensand will last a long time, I usually keep separate bowls of those in my tanks at all times and change them maybe about once a week, depending on how dirty they get them. The nuts and freeze dried shrimp will mold quicker, I usually wait until I start to see some funk before I change their food. My biggest problem is overfeeding, I really need to learn portion control! I waste a lot of food because I put too much in for them.
Edit to add: I put my greensand in with my calcium mix bowls. I have three bowls in each of my tanks. My calcium dish; worm castings, leaves, seeds, nuts, etc dish; then their regular food dish.

I don't have too many foods that I can supply for my crabs, other than just fruits and vegetables, but I do know that apparently cuttlebone last a long time in my tank, as long as you keep it away from the main food source where I can get soggy and or moldy. I think that crickets and mealworms could work, since they are freeze-dried and dehydrated, but I have yet to test this because my crabs haven't touched them at all.

Freeze-dried tiny things like bloodworms (a favorite!) don't seem to mold (of course they usually don't stay around long enough to mold, either). I've had the freeze-dried tiny shrimp in there for at least 3 days without seeing any mold, but usually they don't last that long (the crabs love those, too), and if I see one scattered somewhere after that I will take it out, just so it doesn't get buried and start to rot.

I keep a big shell with wormcastings and mineral supplement in the tank basically all the time; when it gets down to just a little and all mixed up, I just toss the rest on the substrate! I've never seen it mold.

I don't think the greensand will mold either. But it is more of a supplement than a food, I think.

If the food starts out dried, it usually will take a few days to mold, depending upon the humidity in the tank and whether it gets wet. If you need to leave the tank without adding food for a few days (if that is why you are asking?), I would suggest crumbling dried leaves around on the substrate, have a cuttlebone in the tank (I keep one in the basket with the extra shells; it stays there until they eat it completely); give them some freeze dried bloodworms (or the HCP "Surf & Turf," that's a good source of protein and chitin and is very dried and powdered) in one place and maybe a dried grain or dried herb mix on the other end of the tank (to encourage movement), make sure your water sources are fresh, and have somebody check at least once daily for proper temp and humidity (because temp or humidity that is way out of range constitutes an emergency).
