DIY Freeze Dried Mixes

Post by SunflowerCrab » Wed May 28, 2025 10:09 pm

My mom has a stock of freeze dried veggies and fruits. I want to use them to make a DIY crab mix. The bags are all air tight. I opening a few bags and realized, once opened the stuff inside gets a little soft pretty quickly.
I know I'll need to add a calcium source and a protein source.

Any ideas?

Freeze dried bugs, like crickets? Freeze dried shrimp? There are dog treats that are only freeze dried chicken or beef.
Eggshells? Cuttle bone?

Freeze dried fruit and freeze dried veggies. Peaches, apples, green beans, broccoli, 1 other fruit, and 1 other veggie. I would buy crushed oyster shells and animal poop. I would use desicant packets to keep everything dry.

Oyster shells would be good calcium too. Which protein?

I can buy a few bags of PureBites. They have freeze dried chicken, beef, minnow, shrimp, salmon, tuna, duck, whitefish, and turkey. All single ingredient. I can buy organic poop like bat guano.

Not sure about herbs OR ratios.

Trying to keep this affordable.
Purebites sells $6-$10 bags of single meat freeze dried.

Did you check out the nutrition care sheet? There is a pyramid that shows how much of each food group crabs need, that might be helpful for you.
