This is where you discuss the conditions of your crabitat -- temperature, humidity, substrate, decorating, etc.

Adding Substrate and Keeping It Moist

Post by S.C. » Mon Aug 21, 2017 11:55 am

I was wondering what is the best way to add substrate to a tank? Right now my deep side is 6 inches, but I would like to make it so 6 inches is the low end and the deep end is at least 8 inches. What is the recommended way to do this? Do I just add some new substrate to the top layer or should everything be mixed together as long as all crabs are currently on the surface?

Also right now my substrate is still at sand castle consistency, but to keep it like this, do I need to mist the sand directly every now and then (right now I mist the air and moss every other day or so). Just want to make sure the substrate doesn't dry out, or will it not dry out as long as the tank is consistently humid enough (mine is between 85 and 88)?

Thank you for any advice!

Depends on if the crabs are up or not in how you add substrate. If you have crabs underneath, most people go with adding an inch per day until the desired result. Just lay it on, and not press or mix it in. If the crabs are up, it may be best to remove them and then add in the substrate and then mix in if required.
Substrate compacts over time, so it may be best to add an inch or two more than what you will think is enough.
In most tanks the sub stays moist enough from the air and condensation running down the walls that you may require little to no misting. IMO, its better to undermist than overmist.
