How many crabs in 27 gallons?

Post by WacklieCacklie » Sat Aug 26, 2017 2:41 am

I've been preparing the terrarium for about a week now. I originally planned on getting two crabs but my little sister decided she wants one as well.
How crabs will fit in a 27 gallon tank?
The last thing I want to do is overcrowd them. I read some previous discussions on the matter but more opinions never hurt.

What are the dimensions? 27 is not a standard size.

In a 20 or 29 gallon (12x30 and either 12 or 18 inches tall) 3 crabs tends to be a really good number even when they get larger. Over the years many crabbers have had great luck with a trio in that size of tank. The taller tanks are safer and can house them for longer as there is more room for deeper substrate.

The dimensions are about 26" L x 19" W x 20" H. Give or take a few centimeters.

I have also have seven inches of substrate, leaving about 13 inches of height for them to climb about on.

Yeah, I think three to four would be a good number if they are a decent size or if this is going to be the tank you need to stick with for the next couple of years. I mean, you could do a ton more than that now if they are all small crabs, but then you'd have to upgrade again as they got older. Some people prefer to do things that way, but others like to set it up and not have to worry about it for several years. It never hurts to start small either and figure out what works for the crabs you end up getting! They'll have their own personalities and some need more room than others.

Alright, thanks for the advice. I think I'll get two and then let my sister get one as well. Hopefully they'll all get along well and I won't have to worry about rehousing them for awhile.
