Chirping?

Post by DreaminginBlue_2 » Tue Aug 29, 2017 11:27 pm

I have 4 E's in a 40 gallon. They all have plenty of room and hiding spaces to be alone if they want to, so I don't think this is a crowding issue.
Lately my two males have been chirping at each other. They walk right up to each other and interact and then chirp angrily. I can't tell if Orion is trying to take Pluto's shell (despite there being dozens of empty and suitable ones) or if they are quarreling over something else?
I've separated them the past few times I've heard them do it. No one has injured anyone, but I want to know what's going on.

Eh, I've always found Es to be very vocal and wanting to argue all the time. If it stops at chirps you're okay. Next time you might want to hang nearby and see how far it goes. With luck they'll shove each other around a bit and then go their separate ways. I used to have to spread food around the tank because one would always guard the dish and then get into screaming matches with the others who wanted closer. Same thing with favorite hides, climbers, etc.

Males especially I had bad luck with. They always got into it with each other, I cannot tell you why. Female are a lot more relaxed.

I have 6 es. I feed them with multiple shells. This way they can move the shells about the tank as they desire. I also provide food throughout the tank since they are scavengers (leaf litter, worm castings, oyster shell, coral, greensand, bark, other wood, chia seed, bird seed, quinoa, etc). Switching out shells in the shell shops frequently might help you too! E's don't change shells often, but they surely check them out.

Do you have a modified hamster wheel? Highly recommend that!!!!
Truly blessed to have incredible creatures, wonderful friends and my amazing family in my life!! I'm very thankful & grateful for all of them! www.thehealthyhermit.com

Oh okay! i think I may have heard them doing something like that. Almost like that strange noise a bendy straw makes? I just thought is was their body moving inside their shell or something like an incidental or not purposefully sound. But now i know! have not heard a cricket type chirp yet though.

They can make some unusual sounds. Crickets, various frogs, squeaky floor boards, scratchy noises. If you hear something out of place, it could be them!
