Moss pit drips
I put the moss in a soap dish off the substrate but I noticed water was dripping so I had to line the dish with saran wrap. I have since just put it in a plastic dish. What is the best way to make a moss pit?

Shower caddies, and plastic baskets make great moss boxes!
I have some in mine, and they love them.

Shower caddies have holes, right? Doesn't it drip onto the substrate?Fanatic wrote:Shower caddies, and plastic baskets make great moss boxes!

Well, yes. Only if your moss is saturated.Cherylco55 wrote:Shower caddies have holes, right? Doesn't it drip onto the substrate?Fanatic wrote:Shower caddies, and plastic baskets make great moss boxes!

I don't mind the drips, it's like natural rainfall.

Oh. Ok. It just seemed like it was going into the substrate and I was worried it would create too much water under there.Fanatic wrote:Well, yes. It won't drip for too long, and it's not a ton of water.
Are you using EE? Or EE + sand?

Ee and sand. More sand than ee.

You could line your moss baskets with strips of coco fiber Matt to help cover the holes but it may just be that your over saturating it. And yes it's probably not good if it's dripping excessively in the same spot on a regular basis. You may develop a bacterial bloom in that spot if it continues to drip unchecked.

Is it ok if I put the moss in a bowl with no holes? Does it matter?Happyhermiehome wrote:You could line your moss baskets with strips of coco fiber Matt to help cover the holes but it may just be that your over saturating it. No, it'd just stay more humid, which is good for it.Cherylco55 wrote:Is it ok if I put the moss in a bowl with no holes? Re: Moss pit drips
Your moss should be moist, not wet. I personally recommend taking moss out rehydrating it, then placing it back into your crabitat. I personally have to replace mine, bc I put mine directly onto my substrate, and the hermits bury in it. To wet mine, I put it into a bucket, and then I squeeze all water out of it so that it is just moist.
Too wet, and it will have a gross swampy smell.

Truly blessed to have incredible creatures, wonderful friends and my amazing family in my life!! I'm very thankful & grateful for all of them! www.thehealthyhermit.com

I was using sphangum moss from petsmart but it was in chunks. There was no way they could bury in it. I purchased today the moss from Home Depot. Cheap and I love it. Hopefully they will love it. I mist it so it's not wet wet.GotButterflies wrote:Your moss should be moist, not wet. I personally recommend taking moss out rehydrating it, then placing it back into your crabitat.
