what type of water in substrate?

This is where you discuss the conditions of your crabitat -- temperature, humidity, substrate, decorating, etc.

what type of water in substrate?

Post by NerdyLisa » Sat Dec 16, 2017 6:52 pm

I read here to use salt water when mixing up substrate. Another site said absolutely do not use salt water only fresh. I guess I am just wanting to confirm that people have used saltwater without issue. My substrate is already mixed up and I really don't want to dump it and start over!

Saltwater prevents mold growth. It is not dangerous for the crabs to do it and not dangerous not to. Some websites just have a stricter set of rules they use.

So long as it was mixed no stronger than what you would use for their drinking water it is safe and I have found it to be extremely helpful in preventing mold and mildew growth, and funky odors. Keep in mind that the salt is a permanent addition, it doesn't evaporate from the substrate like moisture does, so always use fresh when spraying or rewetting so the salt levels don't build up.

And I'd just add that if you are clumsy (like me) and occasionally (that is, semi-regularly) spill the salt water when removing the pool, it's not a bad idea to remove the sand from around the saltwater dish periodically & replace with fresh or you can build up higher levels of salt in that area. High levels of salt in the sub can lead to salt burn type deformities in moulting crabs, and while you may not have this issue, some crabs just love hanging out under the water dishes.
