Rope Heaters

Post by auracaria » Fri Dec 22, 2017 5:43 pm

I was given some hermit crabs a while ago for my son, but we lost a couple and after a lot of research, I know that the set up we were given for them is not right. So I'm in the process of buying a new tank and equipment to give them a proper home. I know that the heating was not right in the old tank, and that is something I'm looking at now. The one I have is a stick on to the back of the tank version, but I was wondering if the rope style heaters that I've seen for reptile tanks might work? https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/222588321168. I plan on making a pretty intricate environment, so I thought I could put this under the substrate, and around the various activity areas and levels in the tank. Would something like this work, or should it be avoided?

Thank you.

No, you want a heat mat that sticks to the outside of the tank, on the side, never under the substrate.

Ultratherms are the most popular.

Fluker's and Zilla also make them.

The rope heaters are dangerous with hermits because hermits like to pinch at squishy things, like the coverings on electric plugs. There is a good chance they would pick right through it!

Thank you for the quick responses. Will scrap the rope heater idea and go for the stick on the glass ones.

I'm not sure if those brands are available in Australia, but I'll do some research. Thank you.

I'd suggest going with an ebay purchase, got one from there and can't reccomend it enough! IMO a lot better heat output than the ones that the stores carry!
