That much moisture that close to the sensor can also cause it to read wrong faster.

Forgive me if I’m wrong (I haven’t used an Accurite before) but I think it has to do with moisture getting inside of it and breaking it/making the screen unreadable. :)

It's more like the crabs will knock it over, climb on it, & get sand in the back of it. Between the sand particles, moisture, etc, it can damage the guage :)

Gotcha, thanks for clearing it up! I actually just found an Accurite we bought a couple of years ago as an indoor/outdoor set, and I'm thinking of putting it inside. Since both of my crabs are down right now, would it be safe to set it on the substrate?

That is up to you...being that crabs are nocturnal a majority of the time, you never know when they are going to come up. Btw, these gauges also run on a battery. I have had no issues with mine since keeping them off of the substrate :)

True. I've seen no sign from either of them, though. Everything is in the right place, no sand in the water, etc. I'll probably set it on top of the humidity house if I can, though. Thanks. :D

We just used the last of our batteries yesterday, so I'll have to wait until next weekend to buy some. Darn.
