Re: stands breaking
The stand is built to hold the tank and 75 gallons of water at 8 pounds per gallon plus sand and rock. The sand we use is around 16 pounds per gallons so it will weigh the same or less as a full aquarium.
Now, if you are talking old, abused, beaten up stand - all bets are off. I have used some shoddy stands in my day, but always after shoring them up with braces or new pieces of wood. The old stands made with real pine boards can hold a ton of weight though! Newer ones with plywood and MDF make me nervous when they get beat up.

I had mine on an old coffee table, with spindly legs. When I added more substrate recently, I bought a home-made table made of 2x4's that will hold 200+ pounds. I didn't want to take any chances!
